Exploring the streets of Barcelona – Photo Essay

One of the best – and cheapest – things to do in Barcelona is to just walk around and get a little lost in its beautiful streets. These photos were taken in Central Barcelona, almost all in the Barrio Gotico (Barri Gotic) and El Born/La Ribera districts. These two districts were home to my favourite streets – a little quieter and full of art, character and beautiful buildings. I spent an fantastic afternoon just discovering all the beautiful nooks and crannies, and here’s what I found…

Form and structure

Barcelona narrow street-1

The streets are narrow, the buildings tall. They act like blinkers.

Barcelona balconies-1-2

The angles of the doors and balconies dominate the view.

Barcelona Balconies and plants

Balconies outnumber pedestrians. Plants outnumber balconies.

Barcelona balconies-1

The end of each corner holds a mystery.

Barcelona street end-1

Some corners seem untouched.

Barcelona street colour-1

Barcelona lights night-1#

Delicate lights line the streets.

Barcelona cathedral-1

The People

But it’s the glimpses of the lives within these streets;

from masses of hanging laundry;

Barcelona traffic light-1

to a carelessly parked vespa;

Barcelona vespa-1

and finally to the people themselves;

Barcelona shop front-1

Barcelona shop front 2-2

Barcelona people and graffiti-1

that make for the most vibrant photos of all.
